My main employment was with the Department of Pharmacology, University of Leeds with significant periods in Australia, Guyana, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. My long-term interests were the release of neurotransmitters, toxicity of antidepressants and the use of innovative teaching methods in pharmacology. I developed various simulations of pharmacological preparations and I directed the UK Bioscience Centre as well as the ‘pharma-CAL-ogy’ consortium which produced several pharmacology teaching packages widely used in UK and overseas. I chaired NHS Foundation Trusts for 14 years and have sat on the GMC, the Biobank Ethics and Governance Council and the General Osteopathic Council. My current involvements are with: the Health and Care Professions Council (visitor and Fitness to Practice panel chair); the Teachers’ Regulator (disciplinary panels); the Judicial Appointments Commission (selection of judges) and in hearing Mental Health Act appeals for two local NHS Trusts.
